In August 2019, TerraGraphics supported the Katy Straalsund Memorial Foundation by participating in their 3rd annual “Let’s Kick Domestic Violence” kickball tournament.  The Katy Straalsund Memorial Foundation (KSMF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness and the prevention of relationship violence.  With TerraGraphics support, KSMF raised the funds necessary for the establishment of the Katy Straalsund Endowed Memorial Scholarship at the University of Washington.  This scholarship will be provided to an undergraduate student within the college of speech and hearing sciences, Katy’s own department and among the services she would have needed had Katy survived.

TerraGraphics has participated every year since the tournament’s inception and we look forward to continuing to do so in the future.  It truly is a great time for all while supporting the “love over violence” cause the foundation promotes.

The opportunity that comes with a great STEM education is clear.  From gaining the critical skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the 21stcentury economy, to solving problems in your own backyard, STEM is essential to every student’s future success.  What’s not always clear is the path from STEM student to STEM professional. That’s where TerraGraphics and the Mid-Columbia STEM Network come in.

TerraGraphics is a locally owned HUBZone Small Business that provides a wide range of technical support to projects throughout the western US, including the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford Site. They specialize in electrical, mechanical, and structural design, field geologic and archaeological services, and many other STEM intensive services.  TerraGraphics has thrived throughout their 34 years in operations.  In 2013, TerraGraphics opened an office in the Tri-Cities and has experienced substantial growth and they know that their local community is a big reason why.  The Mid-Columbia STEM Network has been a pioneer in creating STEM education opportunity in the Tri-Cities area through bringing together the necessary partners of business, education, and the community at large.  This coalescence of stakeholders had led to transformational STEM experiences such as STEM like Me, a career connected learning experience that pairs middle school students with industry professionals through hands-on career exploration. “TerraGraphics extraordinary commitment to community service has led to them becoming a top provider of STEM Like ME! volunteers in our region.  TerraGraphics employees are creative, dedicated and make a huge impact on our students,” reports Deb Bowen, STEM Network Director.

President of TerraGraphics, Dave Legard, has made community giving and investment around STEM a core part of their business which is why they continue to maintain the federal designation of being a HUBZone-certified small business.  What this translates to is a commitment to hiring and supporting employees from historically and economically disadvantaged areas within our community.   But TerraGraphics knew they could do more.

When it comes to creating the opportunity that Washington students are so deserving of, it often takes a village to get them to that point where they can take charge of their own future. The partnership between TerraGraphics, the Mid-Columbia STEM Network, and the greater Tri-Cities community is an example of what that village looks like in the 21stcentury.

Pasco, Washington – TerraGraphics, Inc. participated in a STEM Like Me Program event. Professionals from TerraGraphics engaged with small groups of local middle school students, advising each group about the mentor’s focus, their education, and their current job role. The men-tors created hands-on activities to capture the groups interest; with the intention to bridge a learning experience for each student to the mentors’ career. Collectively, the TerraGraphics mentors stated, “This is a fun opportunity. It was exciting to see students really engage with the careers they found interesting.”

TerraGraphics professional , Heath Low, was awarded a plaque for his leadership and dedication to building a bridge that continues to link students, educators, and the community to STEM resources through the Mid- Columbia STEM Network. TerraGraphics looks to continue their participation with STEM Like Me, and provide continuous effort to give back to the community.

The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) contracted TerraGraphics to develop a Hanford Site access and sampling program. The program will establish the requirements for CTUIR employees to complete requisite training and evaluation to safely access and perform sampling specific duties on the Hanford Site in areas authorized by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). As the DOE completes active remediation on portions of the Hanford Site, agreements are made that allow the CTUIR to assess lands historically utilized by the tribes. To establish a complete program for site access and sampling deployable by September 2018, TerraGraphics is leading DOE and one of their prime contractors in the generation and approval of protocols for sampling, safety, training, waste management, shipment, data management, and reporting. TerraGraphics was selected for this scope because of the long working relationships between its employees and functional organizations of the Hanford Site. Knowing how to get work done on the Hanford Site is a product of the depth of experience held by our employees, which is critical in implementing a process that will allow the CTUIR to get their desired work done under the requirements imposed by the DOE.
